Giants Netball season preview A Set the default text size A Set large text size Replay A Set the default text size A Set large text size Last season the Giants came sixth. The biggest change to the Giants’ roster from 2020 is the loss of former Aussie Diamonds captain Caitlin Bassett. On paper that is a massive change. However, in 2020 Bassett struggled to receive court time and even resorted to reading books on the sideline. It was implied (or assumed) this was a result of the introduction of the super shot. This reasoning does not hold much weight given similar style goal shooters like Jhaniele Fowler and Romelda Aiken still dominated, plus there were ten minutes per quarter where the super shot is not relevant. Therefore, there were other factors at play. It is good to see Bassett doing what she does best in 2021 with Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic. ....
Queensland Firebirds season preview A Set the default text size A Set large text size Replay A Set the default text size A Set large text size The Queensland Firebirds won four of their last five matches in 2020 to finish in fifth. The Firebirds have two big inclusions in 2021. Gretel Bueta and Kim Ravaillion both return to Super Netball after giving birth. Ravaillion also returns to the Firebrids after a stint with Collingwood. Ravaillion will help fill the gap left by Mahalia Cassidy, who has joined the Sunshine Coast Lightning. Bueta has used her previous basketball background to introduce changes to the way goal attack is played, one of which is scoring via a lay up, which netball traditionalists may not be happy about, but it certainly brings a new dynamic to the game. ....
West Coast Fever season preview A Set the default text size A Set large text size Replay A Set the default text size A Set large text size Last season the West Coast Fever finished second. The West Coast Fever made the grand final in both 2018 and 2020 and split those grand final appearances with a sixth-place finish in 2019. The Fever lost a thrilling grand final to the Vixens by two points. Traditionally it would be goals but with the invention of the super shot, it is now points. Sorry traditionalists – and I am one of those – the super shot is still around for 2021. ....
NSW Swifts season preview A Set the default text size A Set large text size Replay A Set the default text size A Set large text size After winning the 2019 championship, the NSW Swifts were only half a game away from the top two and earning a double chance. The Swifts lost in the minor semi-final to the West Coast Fever to finish fourth. The word that comes to mind when you think of the NSW Swifts’ roster is stability. The shooting circle will again see Trinidad and Tobago shooter Sam Wallace combine her size and athleticism with the speed and creativity of English Rose Helen Housby, with Sophie Garbin to again provide the third prong to their attack circle. ....
Sunshine Coast Lightning season preview A Set the default text size A Set large text size Replay A Set the default text size A Set large text size In their first three seasons, the Sunshine Coast Lightning played in all three grand finals, including winning the first two titles. Last season, the Lightning lost in the preliminary final. The Lightning have some big shoes to fill with the retirement of New Zealand Silver Ferns legend, Laura Langman. Langman was in the top five in the competition in 2020 for goal assists with 255. The Lightning have made an astute recruitment to help fill the void left by Langman. They have recruited Mahalia Cassidy from the Queensland Firebirds. ....
