A CELEBRATION of Mozart at his most cheerful greeted patrons of the Canberra International Music Festival in “Greatest Mozart I”, the first of two such concerts in the festival linked to the festival theme, “The Idea of Vienna”.
To be sure, one of the three works played wasn’t actually Mozart, but there was method in the programming of this concert, in which soloists and musicians from the Australian Romantic & Classical Orchestra performed three major key works that gave insights into the way Mozart worked. ....

From Italian community clubs to high-end restaurants: the rise of amaro in Australia

For many decades in Australia, amaro was a drink rarely found outside Italian community clubs or the hands of bartenders after a shift.
In the past five years, however, the bittersweet liqueur has gone from underground hit to high-end superstar, with an increasing number of distilleries, bars and restaurants pouring the herbal elixir. At least one chef is even making amaro at his restaurant.
When the second Victorian lockdown hit, I thought I better do something different, says Michael Ryan, owner-chef of two-hatted Beechworth restaurant Provenance. I always loved amaro, so I set about extracting botanicals to blend my own. ....

Mercury Business Awards 2020 winners finally get their trophies
The winners of our Mercury Business Awards for 2020 finally have their hands on their unique trophies.
Each of our 11 winners received a trophy made from slate kindly supplied by Clipsham Stone Cutting Company, and wood supplied by Viking Signs.
And coincidentally, Susie Nottingham who runs Clipsham Stone Cutting Company with husband Martin, was able to see one of the trophies being handed over after she arrived for a takeaway at The March Hare Bakery and Tea Rooms as owner Amy Roberts was being photographed outside!

Due to Covid-19 restrictions many of our sponsors were unable to make the presentations so Mercury editor Kerry Coupe had the honour of delivery the trophies in a covid-secure way. ....
