'It's turned my whole life upside down': COVID-19 long-haulers recount their 'horrifying' experiences


 
EDMONTON
Canadian researchers are working to understand why some people now known as long-haulers struggle with long-term COVID-19 symptoms and others don’t once they recover from the disease.
“As much as 20 per cent of people six weeks after their diagnosis still have some symptoms,” Dr. Lynora Saxinger told CTV News Edmonton.
Saxinger explained the default position is to treat symptoms as they present themselves and to provide supportive care and counselling when needed.
“At the end of the day just documenting what people are experiencing is less good than trying to fix it, but you can’t just treat everyone with everything. You have to have something to go on.” ....

Canadian woman has been sick with COVID-19 long-term effects for nearly 9 months


Ashley Antonio, 35, a lawyer from Edmonton, Canada first became sick in March
She initially thought she had stomach flu with symptoms lasting about a week
Symptoms returned weeks later suffering body aches and rapid heartbeat 
She was ultimately forced to take long-term sick leave and take five months off
Antonio still suffers from painful complications including blinding headaches, lung congestion, rashes, chronic swelling in her joints and heart palpitations
Doctors are aware of long covid  on people who initially had a mild illness but  has not yet been studied in depth ....

Ashley Antonio, 35, only suffered mildly from the virus when she contracted just on 257 days ago. 
But now the trial lawyer appears to be suffering from the effects of what she fears is the 
‘long covid’. The 35-year-old is among a growing number of Canadians known as COVID long-haulers people who have struggled for months with persistent and sometimes debilitating symptoms. ....
