Alpine Theatre in Ripley to receive money for repairs

Main Street Ripley got good news from the July 21 meeting of the Jackson County Commission. The Alpine Theatre will reap the benefit.
Commissioners Dick Waybright, Mitch Morrison and Mike Randolph approved $15,000 for repairs to the historic theatre in Ripley.
Speaking after the meeting, Sally Blessing, Main Street acting director, said the funds will be used to start on a priority list.
“The first order of precedence is some sort of gutter guards,” she said. “A lot of our water issues stem from those gutters. After that we’ll deal with roof drainage.”
Blessing said an additional benefit of receiving the funds is the ability to fill the matching portion of grants the organization will be seeking. ....

Ripley on Sale and Flea Market at the Lakes May 28-29

Ripley is on sale and so is Cedar Lakes.
For the first time, Main Street Ripley’s annual Memorial Day weekend event on the courthouse lawn will have a partner. Flea Market at the Lakes will take place during the same time as Ripley on Sale. The events will be Friday, May 28, from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. and Saturday, May 29, from 8 a.m.-4 p.m.
“It was the perfect time to refresh something that’s been in place for many years,” said Sally Blessing, Main Street Ripley interim director. “We’ve been at this for 21 years, so this partnership is a welcome addition.” ....

Ohio Valley History… Moving pictures and ‘talkies’

The original variety show, vaudeville shows were made up of a dozen or more acts by singers, dancers, comedians, strongmen, acrobats, lecturers, minstrels, and more that traveled the country in companies like A.L Fields’ Minstrels and The Bostonians. In 1896, while G.W.M. Hooff was building his new opera house here in Point Pleasant, vaudeville was the height of American entertainment.
Yet, that same year, 1896, was the beginning of the end for vaudeville. On April 20th, Thomas Edison’s Vitascope premiered at Koster & Bial’s Music Hall in New York City. It was just a montage of short clips without any sound, each hardly any longer than today’s commercials, but this was the first display of moving pictures in the United States. Within a year, there were three major film companies cranking out new silent films ....
