The contribution of George Zangalis

George Zangalis came to Australia on 15 February 1950, as a political refugee, aged 19.  Working at General Motors and living in a single room apartment his life was lonely but soon made friends as he joined Demokritos, his Union and became a  member, of the Communist youth and finally of the CPA.
I first met GZ in 1967 at a  meeting against the newly imposed junta regime in Greece. He had to wait for 23 years till finally in 1973 he could be granted citizenship and get a passport to visit his brother in the Soviet Union and other family members in Greece. In the last few years he used to visti Drymades, his native village regularly. I saw him five days before his death and told me half of his heart was in Drymades and half in Australia. ....

Year 12 student Iman Al Atassi has overcome bigger challenges than those thrown up in 2020, including fleeing Syria with her family five years ago.
Iman said this year s lockdown was crazy and challenging, from not being able to see friends or teachers face to face, to staring at screens for 12 hours a day.
Iman, 18, has just finished year 12 at St Albans College. She and her family moved to Australia in 2015 after fleeing Syria.

How did we get through it? Honestly, we just had to persevere and try our best, because it s year 12 and we have to work hard to get where we want even though everything was so disruptive, said Iman, who, like almost 65,000 other year 12 students, will get her results on Wednesday morning. ....

Vale Yiannis Papanikolaou, a great teacher

I was deeply saddened to hear the news from Northern Greece earlier this week that good friend and former colleague Yiannis Papanikolaou had passed away, at the young age of 61, from complications caused by coronavirus.
I first met Yiannis when he came to Australia with his young family in the 90s to teach Greek Language at Alphington Grammar, where I was working as a music teacher. I have a clear picture of him in my mind standing in the door of the band room with a big grin on his face as I was trying to teach a bunch of students how to play Greek music together. We became friends and he used to regularly give me cassettes and CDs of tunes that might be useful to use with the students. I was really new to Greek music at the time and he helped me discover a lot of classic pieces that broadened my horizons away from the Greek pop music that was popular with the teenage students. The other insights that I gained from getting to know Yiannis and his family were about family life ....
