Third candidate drops out of Oxford Board of Aldermen race

OXFORD
• A recent opinion by the state’s top legal agency over new residency requirements has now cut short a third candidacy for the Oxford Board of Aldermen.
D. Ryan Grover, a Democratic candidate for the board’s 3rd Ward, has officially withdrawn from the Democratic primary, according to Oxford Municipal Clerk Ashley Atkinson.
Atkinson did not state a reason for Grover’s withdrawal, but his eligibility was in question because he could not outright prove he had lived in Ward 3 for at least two years, according to records Atkinson presented at a Monday election commission meeting.
The political confusion stems from a recent opinion from Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch’s Office stating that candidates for ward positions must be residents of the ward they hope to represent for at least two years immediately preceding the date of the election. ....

Council reluctance to add civil rights staff draws harsh rebuke from Davenport alderman

TOM BARTON
A reluctance among Davenport City Council members to add staff to more quickly investigate cases of discrimination in the city drew a sharp rebuke Tuesday from the body s lone Black member.
Disgusting, Alderman Patrick Peacock, 7th Ward, said following a City Council work session to consider a request to add an investigator to help with a backlog of cases handled by the Davenport Civil Rights Commission.
Flabbergasted, Peacock said after a majority on council expressed a reluctance to amend the city s proposed budget for the fiscal year beginning July 1 to pay for an additional investigator. I think there s leaders within the community who pay lip service to inclusion and diversity. . And it was evident, clearly, here . for a department that is historically underfunded. ....

Should librarians be moved up in the vaccine line? Chicago health commissioner says no

JOHN BYRNE
Chicago Tribune
Chicago’s health commissioner on Monday rejected the idea of adding librarians to the ranks of essential workers to get prioritized for COVID-19 vaccine, saying the infection rates aren’t high enough within that group to justify the move.
After a group of progressive aldermen and union leaders last week called for public library workers to be considered front-line workers and moved up the vaccine line, Dr. Allison Arwady said the stats don’t support such a change.
“Librarians in particular . they are the lowest department for cases, honestly,” Arwady said. Only city public safety workers, teachers and transit workers are among the latest group of those eligible to get vaccinated, with other city workers still waiting their turn. ....

Jonesborough establishes scholarship in honor of Ernest McKinney, town's first African American alderman | News

Former Jonesborough Alderman Ernest McKinney was “an advocate of education for all” — spending his life teaching in various Washington County schools and serving as chairman of the Washington County School Board, the first African American elected to it.
McKinney, who died in 2009, was also the first African American alderman in the town of Jonesborough, elected on the same night Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in 1968. Already a historical giant with an undeniable and lasting legacy in the town (the McKinney Center for the Arts is named for him), McKinney’s family and the town of Jonesborough wanted to add to his legacy by establishing the Ernest McKinney Scholarship Fund. ....
