Guardian reforms bring more oversight

An attempt by Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham’s administration to push its own adult guardianship reform measure appeared dead last legislative session after running afoul of state judges who were concerned about its constitutionality.
What resulted – looking very little like the original bill – is a comprehensive new law that promises thousands of incapacitated adults under court-ordered guardianship more oversight of their cases by a new team of court auditors. It also sets up a pilot program in which volunteer court visitors will meet with those under guardianship to ensure their welfare.
Lujan Grisham personally worked with judges, the state Office of Guardianship, and legislators on the reforms, her office said, and signed the measure into law April 8. ....

Legislation would require New Mexico licensure for professional guardians

SANTA FE – Today, Rep. Marian Matthews and the New Mexico Developmental Disabilities Planning Council [DDPC] Office of Guardianship will present House Bill 234 before the House State Government, Elections and Indians Affairs Committee.  HB 234 requires state licensure for professional guardians and professional conservators, and strengthens oversight of state-funded guardianship service providers.  Additional sponsors for the bill include Rep. Joanne Ferrary, Sen. Gerald Ortiz y Pino, Sen. Linda Lopez, and Sen. Katy Duhigg. 
“Guardians are charged with protecting the safety, welfare, and rights of the people they serve,” Rep. Matthews said. “Guardians make crucial life decisions on behalf of their protected persons, including health, medical, residential, employment, and financial decisions. Guardians and conservators have enormous power over their protected persons, yet the state currently has no way to monitor guardians or co ....

State encourages people with developmental disabilities to get COVID-19 vaccine

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.  New Mexicans who are 16 and older with intellectual and developmental disabilities can now get the COVID-19 vaccine. 
I was vaccinated just about two weeks ago, said Marilyn Martinez, who lives with an intellectual and developmental disability.
Martinez said she suffered from some side effects, but they didn t last long.
Disabilities could impact a body s immune system, which is why the state is allowing those 16 and older with intellectual and developmental disabilities to get the vaccine.
Research has shown, and there have been many studies and publications out there that show that people who live with intellectual and developmental disabilities are at much higher risk of COVID transmission of COVID infection, said Alice Liu McCoy of the New Mexico Developmental Disabilities Planning Council. ....

ALTSD: Seniors; People With Disabilities Will Have Been Offered First Dose Of Moderna COVID Vaccine By Friday
ALTSD News:
The State’s Aging and Long-Term Services Department [ALTSD] has announced that by Friday, Jan. 22 all 309 of New Mexico’s Nursing Homes and Assisted Living Facilities (including staff and residents) will have been offered the first dose of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine.
Now the department is working to register currently-eligible populations (people 75+ years of age and individuals with underlying health conditions), as well as individuals who will be eligible in upcoming phases.
