The former riding school at Bank Newton REFUSED plans to convert a former indoor riding school in Bank Newton, near Gargrave, to holiday lets will be reviewed by a government planning inspector. The scheme, to convert the semi-derelict metal barn into eight units with parking and landscaping, was refused by Craven District Council in January. It will now be decided by the Planning Inspectorate following an appeal by Alice Fitton. Although described as a ‘conversion’, the council said the barn, on a bridlepath next to Newton Grange Farm, would have to be largely demolished and refused permission on grounds of design, impact on nearby heritage assets and on the countryside. ....

William Rivers’s 22-bore British Flintlock 1801 Pattern Long Sea Service Pistol is expected to fetch around £1,000 to £2,000 when is it sold, according to Tennants Auctioneers. The pistol will be sold with a handwritten note which was found rolled up in the barrel. The note reads: “William Rivers was my great great grandad and during the Battle of Trafalgar was in charge of the ships cannons on board H.M.S. Victory. He kept his gun on retiring from the navy in 1825 – John Rivers 1906”. ....

The indoor riding school at Bank Newton A PLANNED conversion of a no longer used indoor riding school near Gargrave into eight holiday lets with parking has been refused permission by Craven District Council. Although described by the applicant as a ‘conversion’, the council said the metal barn on a bridlepath next to Newton Grange Farm at Bank Newton would have to be largely demolished and that the scheme should therefore be considered as a new build in the open countryside. The application, which was opposed by Bank Newton Parish Council, by nearby residents, the nearby holiday homes and wedding venue, and a livery yard, was turned down without going before the council’s planning committee, on four different grounds. ....
