Kangaroos "communicate" with keepers to ask for help: Aussie study - World News

SYDNEY, Dec. 17 (Xinhua) Australian kangaroos are able to communicate with their keepers and ask them for help, according to a study by the University of Sydney (UoS) and University of Roehampton (UoR) in London.
The study, released on Wednesday, involved placing food in a closed plastic container that the kangaroos were unable to open. After trying and failing to reach the food, the kangaroos would gaze at and interact with nearby keepers, showing a remarkable depth of understanding.
We ve previously thought only domesticated animals try to ask for help with a problem. But kangaroos do it too, said study co-author Dr Alexandra Green, a post-doctoral researcher at the UoS School of Veterinary Science. ....

FREEPIK
SYDNEY — Kangaroos can learn to communicate with humans similar to how domesticated dogs do, by using their gaze to “point” and ask for help, researchers said in a study published on Wednesday.
The study involved 11 kangaroos that lived in captivity but had not been domesticated. Ten of the 11 marsupials intently gazed at researchers when they were unable to open a box with food, according to the report. Nine alternately looked at the human and at the container, as a way of pointing or gesturing toward the object.
“We interpreted this as a deliberate form of communication, a request for help,” Alan McElligott, the Irish researcher who led the study, told Reuters in a call from Hong Kong. ....

Kangaroos communicate with humans in similar way to domesticated animals – study

Kangaroos can communicate with humans despite never being domesticated, according to a new study.
Researchers say their findings challenge the notion that this behaviour is usually restricted to animals like dogs, horses or goats.
The research looked at kangaroos at three locations across Australia and found that the animals gazed at a human when trying to access food placed in a closed box.
The kangaroos used gazes to communicate with the human instead of attempting to open the box themselves, a behaviour that is usually expected for domesticated animals, the scientists say.
Lead author Dr Alan McElligott, who conducted the study at the University of Roehampton (now based at City University of Hong Kong), said: “Through this study, we were able to see that communication between animals can be learnt and that the behaviour of gazing at humans to access food is not related to domestication. ....
