University of Kansas, KU Alumni Association to build Jayhawk Welcome Center

LAWRENCE The University of Kansas and the KU Alumni Association will usher in a new era of student recruitment with the construction of a Jayhawk Welcome Center at the entrance to the historic Jayhawk Boulevard corridor of the Lawrence campus.
Funded entirely through private gifts, the $21 million, 30,000-square-foot structure will connect to the Adams Alumni Center, headquarters of the KU Alumni Association, at 1266 Oread Ave. As the new starting point for all campus visits by prospective students and their families, the Jayhawk Welcome Center will house approximately 20 members of the KU Admissions staff. The project also will include the renovation of the Adams Center, which opened in 1983. ....

Earlier today, while doing research for a forthcoming project, I ran across the name Angela Aycock. I will admit because I did not grow up in the area, and have not followed women’s basketball as closely as perhaps I should that I did not immediately know who she was. Aycock, when she graduated from Lincoln High School in the early 1990s, was the best female basketball player in the state, and arguably the best in the country. The 6-foot-2 guard went on to play for the University of Kansas, and she starred there, too she was co-Player of the Year as a junior and an All-American as a senior. ....

The University of Kansas has submitted a proposal to the Kansas Board of Regents to construct a nearly $200 million science building, a move that ‘appalled’ a group of faculty members concerned about KU’s budget.
But a KU spokesperson said the university’s proposal was procedural and that the building’s construction would be dependent on securing funding. KU does not expect plans for the new building a second integrated science building to materialize “soon,” spokesperson Erinn Barcomb-Peterson said, and the university remains focused on its immediate budget challenges. ....

After the COVID-19 pandemic led to the cancellation of commencement celebrations last spring, at least two universities in Douglas County have elected to host commencements this May celebrating the classes of 2021 and 2020.
The University of Kansas and Baker University will both hold commencement celebrations over two different weekends in May. Douglas County’s other university, Haskell Indian Nations University, has not yet released any plans about graduation.

KU will host three graduation ceremonies in one day for its Class of 2021 graduates this spring. ....
