GASTON COUNTY, N.C. (WBTV) - Gaston County commissioners will once again discuss a proposed ordinance that would implement rules and regulations for public protests in the county.
The latest draft of the ordinance, designed to outline the county notification process for public assemblies, will be discussed at next week’s meeting of the Gaston County Board of Commissioners. Commissioner Kim Johnson, the sponsor of the latest draft of the ordinance, said the item will be discussed at the commissioners’ February 23 meeting. ....

GASTONIA, N.C. Despite healthcare leaders pushing for people to get the COVID-19 vaccine, some firefighters, paramedics, and EMTs in agencies from Charlotte to Gaston County, are declining to get vaccinated.
Gastonia Fire Department said around 20% of their eligible firefighters got vaccinated.
The department s public information officer, Jim Landis, said each firefighter has different reasons for his or her apprehension, but the department is still encouraging them to get inoculated.
We re hoping more people change their minds, Landis said. Right now, there s nothing you can [do] to make them go get it. It s an optional thing, but we re hoping more people are going to get it. ....

Gaston district attorney says protest ordinance unenforceable.

Gaston County District Attorney Locke Bell took issue Wednesday with a proposed county mass gathering ordinance commissioners could consider later this month.
Bell cited jurisdictional and enforcement concerns related to the ordinance, which seeks to impose a fee on those who organize a protest or any other type of mass gathering of more than 25 people.
They have not thought this thing through, Bell said. If 25 kids want to get together around the flag pole at school and pray, does that mean they ll have to get a permit? If 25 kids want to gather at a football field, on county property, and pray before a game will they need a permit? What about the National Day of Prayer? ....

Gaston County officials have removed the chain link fences from around both the Confederate monument at the courthouse and the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. memorial near the social services building on Long Avenue.
It looks pretty good right now, said Tom Keigher, chairman of the Gaston County Board of Commissioners. I think it s a great thing, particularly with Martin Luther King Day upon us in a week.
Gaston County did not recognize Martin Luther King Jr. Day as a county holiday until January 2003.
At the time, fewer than five other counties in North Carolina did not give county employees the day off in honor of the Civil Rights icon. The federal government first celebrated Martin Luther King Jr. Day in January 1986. ....
