It s official: Florida Rep. Val Demings is running for U.S. Senate.
ORLANDO, Fla. - With the theme Never Tire, Orlando Democratic Congresswoman Val Demings on Wednesday formally launched her campaign to try to unseat U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., in 2022.
The announcement was not a surprise: Demings last month said to stay tuned amid reports that she would run for Senate.
She made the announcement in a YouTube video on Wednesday morning.
Nevertheless, her entrance ratchets up the profile of the race, as Demings drew national attention last year when President Joe Biden considered her as a potential running mate and as she served as one of the House impeachment managers in former President Donald Trump’s first impeachment trial. ....

Florida Democratic Rep. Val Demings launched a bid for Senate on Wednesday, aiming to unseat incumbent Republican Sen. Marco Rubio in 2022.
Demings, formerly chief of Orlando police, was on President Joe Biden’s list of
“When you grow up in the South poor, black, and female, you have to have faith, and progress, and opportunity,” Demings, 64, says in her announcement video.
She documents her journey from being the daughter of a janitor and a maid in Jacksonville to joining the police force in Orlando and working her way up while being a “working mom.”
Talking over a compilation of photos of Rubio with former President Donald Trump and other politicians such as Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, Demings then takes aim at the incumbent, accusing Rubio of being “too tired to fight the efforts to suppress the people’s vote.” ....

One of Tampa and Florida’s most notable voices on Cuban relations is exploring a run against a man he stands in diametric opposition to: U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio.
Albert “Al” Fox Jr., 77, has been an advocate for reestablishing relationships with Cuba for the past two decades as the president of the nonprofit he founded, Alliance for Responsible Cuba Policy Foundation.
On Monday, the Democrat announced he’s forming an exploratory committee for the 2022 Senate race.
Fox said he had been mulling a run for the past year, but the Jan. 6 Capitol riot changed things for him. He had known one of the Capitol police officers who died by suicide, Howard Liebengood, since Liebengood was 10 years old, Fox said. ....
