A spacecraft from the United Arab Emirates has swung into orbit around Mars in a triumph for the Arab world s first interplanetary mission.
Mission controllers at the UAE s space centre in Dubai announced Tuesday that the craft reached the end of its nearly seven-month, 480-million-kilometre journey and began circling the red planet. The craft is called Amal, which is Arabic for Hope. And it will gather data on Mars thin atmosphere. ....

A 'Megasatellite' Orbiting Ceres Would Make a Fine Home For Humans, Scientist Says

A Megasatellite Orbiting Ceres Would Make a Fine Home For Humans, Scientist Says
21 JANUARY 2021
Given all the logistics involved, it s unlikely that humanity will ever see our way outside the Solar System to colonise exoplanets. But the possibility of settling elsewhere inside the Solar System isn t so far-fetched.

NASA is planning an outpost on the Moon. Crewed missions to Mars aren t far off. Heck, we even already have humans living off-planet (albeit for temporary stints) on the International Space Station.
So is there anywhere else in the Solar System that humans could make our home? Well, according to physicist and astrobiologist Pekka Janhunen of the Finnish Meteorological Institute in Finland, dwarf planet Ceres isn t entirely implausible. ....

The Mysterious 'Alien Megastructure' Star Is Not Alone, Astronomers Discover

The Mysterious Alien Megastructure Star Is Not Alone, Astronomers Discover
20 JANUARY 2021
A new clue has just been found that could help solve the mystery of a weirdly dimming star. KIC 8462852, also known as Boyajian s Star, seems to have a binary companion that could be contributing to its irregular dips in brightness.

If confirmed with more detailed observations, the newly discovered companion star could help astronomers finally solve KIC 8462852 s ongoing mystery.
The star was discovered in 2015 by astronomer Tabetha Boyajian (hence it was previously Tabby s Star), and since then it has proven to be a real puzzle. It s a yellow-white dwarf star around 1,470 light-years away, and it keeps dimming erratically. There is no regularity either to the timing of the star s dimming, or the depth - some of the dips in starlight have been as deep as 22 percent. ....
