Maybe, Rio Grande High baseball coach Orlando Griego suggested to one of his assistant coaches during Game 1, it was time to move Jose Martinez up in the Ravens batting order.
It was Martinez, a freshman designated hitter in the 8 hole, who delivered the season’s most clutch swing for Rio Grande, a two-out, tie-breaking RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning Saturday that sent the Ravens to a 4-3 win over visiting Albuquerque High in the first game of a District 5-5A doubleheader.
“Pretty good freshman,” Griego said of Martinez, who was 3-for-3 with two RBIs in the opener.

The Fort Lewis College women’s basketball team had one of the league’s best teams tied 70-70 with one minute to go inside FLC’s home gym in Durango. The visitors made the winning plays when they mattered most.
After FLC senior guard Katrina Chandler made two free throws to tie the game, Westminster College senior point guard Mariah Martin sliced through the Skyhawks’ defense and finished a right-handed layup to give the Griffins a lead they would not relinquish.
