Forum to discuss Massachusetts gubernatorial race COURTESY OF THE ARLINGTON DEMOCRATIC TOWN COMMITTEE The second of a three-part series of interactive forums, hosted by the Arlington Democratic Town Committee, will be held virtually from 7 to 8:30 p.m. June 3. In these forums, Democratic activists come together to inspire and inform one another on actions they can take at the national, state and local levels to help elect Democrats. Titled “Ensuring a Democratic Victory in the 2022 Massachusetts Gubernatorial Race,” speakers include Wilnelia Rivera, who led Ayanna Pressley’s successful congressional campaign and was recently named one of the 100 most influential Bostonians by Boston Magazine, and Lezlie Braxton Campbell, president of the Young Democrats of Massachusetts. The moderator is Crystal Haynes, Emmy award winning journalist and member of the Arlington Human Rights Commission. ....

They ve become a familiar sight since the wave of Black Lives Matter street protests after George Floyd was killed by a now-former Minneapolis police officer. Since then, Americans, some who never protested before, have signaled their support for antiracism efforts by displaying Black Lives Matter signs on their lawn, in store windows, and as banners on churches and community buildings. ....
Wicked Local Arlington will be effectively replacing one holiday with another this year, following approval from Town Meeting on Monday, April 26. National Indigenous People s Day will replace Columbus Day in Arlington, as the holiday will shift from honoring explorer Christopher Columbus, to reflecting on the lives, experiences and culture of Native Americans. Juneteenth Independence Day, to be celebrated June 19, recognizes June 19, 1865, the day when slaves in Galveston, Texas, were made aware of the Emancipation Proclamation. The slaves in Galveston are conventionally believed to be the last slaves in the country to hear of the proclamation, made more than two years earlier. The holiday celebrates the end of formal enslavement of African-Americans. ....
Wicked Local Following the mass shooting that killed eight in Georgia last month, local groups are working on ways to heal and prevent future acts of violence that target Asian Americans. While the Cherokee County Sheriff s Department is still investigating the motivations of the shooter, local activist groups have spoken out about the attack on Asian Americans. The Arlington Human Rights Commission released a public statement on the shootings last week. Like many in Arlington, the AHRC is horrified and saddened by the fatal shooting of eight people in Georgia on March 16. While the shootings are still being investigated, the fact that seven women, six of whom were Asian, were killed, demonstrates the deadly combination of racism, misogyny, and gun violence, the statement reads. ....

An Arlington Human Rights Commission newsletter says the group firmly believes black history is everyone s history and has planned a series of events in observance and celebration of Black History Month. Subscribe Following Select Board approval Jan. 25, the AHRC is unveiling six new banner designs, to be hung along Mass. Ave. in East Arlington. This is in addition to last year s banners, which will hang from Broadway Square to Town Hall. Images of the new banners accompany this announcement. ....
