HOLLAND, Michigan Time for One Good Thing someone or something that makes West Michigan a good place to live.
At the start of a chess game, there are 32 pieces on the board. Each team works in uniform strategy to achieve a common goal. That very same philosophy by - also, two separate teams - was recently put into effect at a local school. The result was a big win for everyone who was involved and a lot of people who weren t.
Kimberly Colt Cuningham, 29, of Rice, was sentenced May 14 to three years and nine months in prison, stayed for five years, for one felony count of third-degree drug possession. She was given credit for one year served in jail. Cuningham will be on supervised probation for five years. If she breaks terms of probation, she could go to prison. Judge Kris Davick-Halfen presided.
Aivan James Updike, 25, of Sauk Rapids, was sentenced May 13 to one year in jail, with 275 days stayed, for one gross misdemeanor count of interfering with an emergency call. Updike will serve 90 days in jail, which could be reduced to 30 days if Updike reports timely, according to court records. Updike will be on supervised probation for two years. Judge Michael Jesse presided. One felony count of domestic assault was dismissed.

Anthony Powell, who has died aged 85, was an internationally acclaimed British costume designer who gave period authenticity to George Cukor’s Travels with my Aunt (1972) starring Maggie Smith, John Guillermin’s all-star Agatha Christie adaptation Death on the Nile (1978) and Roman Polanski’s Tess (1979), starring Nastassja Kinski as Thomas Hardy’s heroine – winning Oscars for all three.
