A teaching residency program here in Chattanooga is partnering with a national effort to recruit, develop and retain Black educators.

Teacher At Hamilton County Schools Receives National Award For Excellence

Hamilton County Schools teacher Erika Martin was awarded the California Casualty Award for Teaching Excellence by the National Education Association Foundation.
The California Casualty Awards for Teaching Excellence winners are selected based on their dedication to the profession, community engagement, professional development, attention to diversity and advocacy for fellow educators. Ms. Martin, an instructional coach at East Side Elementary, is one of only 46 public school educators in the country to receive the award.
“Mrs. Martin is an exemplary educator, and we are proud to have her serve in Hamilton County Schools,” said Dr. Bryan Johnson, superintendent of Hamilton County Schools. “Her role as an instructional coach positions her well to influence and develop excellent teachers across our district. Police Blotter: Woman Says Overnight Guest Cleaned Out Her Bank Account; Angler At Ross s Landing Reels In A Rifle

A woman called police from Jaycee Towers, 500 W Martin Luther King Blvd., and said she had lost her keys, possibly in the parking lot or inside the main hallway. She said there were approximately 25 keys on the key ring including a key fob, P.O. box key, three storage building keys and a key to her safety deposit box. She said she had retraced her steps and still could not find them. Police checked with the Jaycee Tower s management office and observed video of the woman entering the building, but there were no signs of the keys being dropped while inside the building. ....

Sadie Norman Smith, 79, passed away January 2, 2021 in Chattanooga. She was born to the late Homer Eugene Norman, Sr. and Flora Mae (Hinton) Norman.
Sadie was a native of Polk Co., Ga. When the family moved to Chattanooga in 1945,
Sadie attended Joseph B. Smith School, East 5th Street School and Orchard Knob Elementary School. She attended Howard High School the Class of 1959.
After graduating Howard, she attended a three-year diploma program at Grady Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Atlanta, GA. It was said if you had a GRADY NURSE you had a well trained nurse. Sadie functioned in various roles: Nurse Practitioner, Clinical Supervisor, Head Nurse, Staff Nurse, Assistant Head Nurse in Medical – Surgical , Nursery, Recovery and Intensive Care Units. ....
