Orkney Islands Council is tendering for a new operator to run one of Orkney’s shortest regular ferry services, on behalf of Orkney Ferries.
The service, from Pierowall in Westray to Papa Westray, is usually operated by a North Isles crew on behalf of Orkney Ferries but OIC has confirmed the service provider, Malcolm Brown from Westray is due to retire, resulting in a market test for a new operator.
The mv Nordic Sea is expected to become the vessel for this service later this year but has been undergoing a near £500,000 refit in Buckie since January, to prepare her for UK certification as a passenger ferry. The vessel was purchased for close to £1million to replace the mv Golden Mariana. ....

A ferry crew in Orkney has become world leaders after training to work on hydrogen-powered vessels.
Five seafarers from Orkney Ferries’ MV Shapinsay completed a new course, thought to be the first in the world, to gain the skills to work onboard the ferry when hydrogen is used in the vessel’s system.
This follows an earlier course completed by the crew which focused on the handling of hydrogen as a cargo. ....

Inter-island ferry services sail back from Level Three restrictions

Inter-island ferry services sail back from Level Three restrictions
December 22, 2020 at 9:17 pm
The news that isles residents will not be disproportionately affected by the new COVID-19 restrictions due to come into place on Boxing Day has been welcomed.
Inter-island ferry services within Orkney will operate similar to the current COVID-19 restrictions currently in place, despite Orkney moving into Level Three of Scottish Government restrictions from Boxing Day.
Under Level Three, travel on public transport is only permissible for essential reasons.
That led to fears from some residents that they would be unable to travel within Orkney.
However, those fears have been eased after Orkney Islands Council (OIC) advised North and South Isles residents that they can continue to use the ferry services and book trips as they have done under the current guidelines. ....
