Two Orkney distilleries are to take part in a £58,781 research project to further investigate the use of “green” hydrogen heating as part of a government initiative to find ways of decarbonising the distilling sector.
The study, at Highland Park and The Orkney Distillery, in Kirkwall, will be led by the Stromness-based European Marine Energy Centre (Emec), along with industrial decarbonisation experts from Edinburgh’s Napier University. ....

The HySpirits 2 project has received £58,781 of funding from the UK Government’s Department of Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) to produce a feasibility study, assessing a host of technologies that would enable the use of green hydrogen as fuel in the distilling process.
Led by the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC), HySpirits 2 brings together leading industry partners including global distilling group Edrington, owners of world-famous Highland Park distillery; and local craft distillery Orkney Distilling Ltd. Both partners have extensive sectoral knowledge and will deliver e ....

Seventeen distilling projects in England and Scotland have received the first phase of a £10 million government-backed funding project to help them switch to low carbon fuels.
The hydrogen-powered Orkney Distillery, part of the HySpirits project led by European Marine Energy Centre
The scheme, which was first announced in last year’s budget, aims to help UK distilleries to cut emissions by almost a million tonnes of CO2 every year, the equivalent to taking 200,000 cars off the road.
Eleven projects in Scotland and six in England have been chosen to partake in the first phase, and will each receive between £44,000 and £75,000 to fund different green projects, such as the creation of a low emission hydrogen boiler and a geothermal distillery. ....
