 The subject of her study is Charles Finger, who started life as an Englishman, a student at the Regent Street Polytechnic Institute in London. There he reveled in the Literary Society, which discussed contemporary writing, paying special attention to writers such as Walt Whitman and Oscar Wilde. Those two writers were known to be gay, but then, and later, Finger and his cohorts steadily see gayness in many other writers: William Morris. Jack London, Sir Richard Burton, Herman Melville, Joseph Conrad, Henry David Thoreau, Richard Halliburton, the painter Grant Wood and many, many others were thought to be gay, bisexual, or would like to be.  ....

ETSU's Dr. Daryl Carter named to Tennessee Historical Society board | Education


JOHNSON CITY – Dr. Daryl A. Carter of East Tennessee State University was recently selected to serve a three-year term on the Tennessee Historical Society (THS) board of directors.
Founded in 1849, the THS is the oldest continually operating historical organization in Tennessee. Its early collection of documents and artifacts related to the state’s natural, aboriginal and civil history became the basis for the Tennessee State Museum, and the documents, which include manuscripts dating back to the colonial era, are now housed at the Tennessee State Library and Archives.
The THS publishes the peer-reviewed Tennessee Historical Quarterly, as well as books and resources on Tennessee history. It also edits the Tennessee Encyclopedia of History and Culture. Among its numerous activities in support of scholarship, the THS has sponsored and produced Tennessee History Day, a statewide competition for students in grades 6-12, since 2009. ....

Accomplishments of the University of Arkansas Press in its 40 years of book publishing will be reviewed by an online panel sponsored by the Washington County Historical Society. The panel will be presented from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 3, through a Zoom link at https://bit.ly/2P9dltu.
