Chaffee County Commissioners approved $2,448,241 in grant awards to 18 recipients during the Spring 2021 Chaffee Common Ground grant funding cycle. Recommendations by the Citizens Advisory Committee were approved recently. Twenty applications requesting $2.92 million were received. The grant funding package includes $2,015,600 for forest health and wildfire resilience, $249,640 to sustain rural landscapes, and $183,001 for recreation management that protects watersheds and landscapes in Chaffee County. Matching cash and in-kind funds total $10.5 million. This marked the third funding cycle since the ballot measure generating Common Ground revenues passed in 2018. To date, more than $5 million has been awarded to 23 local groups and partnerships for 36 programs and projects. Matching investments for these grants will bring $22 million in value to the community by 2026. ....
Drought conditions in April increased in much of western Colorado, as already dry conditions were made worse by well-below-average precipitation, the Colorado Water Supply Outlook stated in its May report. Higher temperatures in the high country worsened the situation with substantial loss of snowpack, which fell to 72 percent of median statewide by the end of April. While the northeastern plains saw more moisture, the storms did little to help conditions west of the Continental Divide. Statewide, 33 SNOTEL sites saw the lowest precipitation on record, while 15 other sites recorded the second-lowest precipitation on record for April. Most of those SNOTEL sites were west of the Continental Divide. ....
Medano Creek is now flowing through the sand near the main parking area at Great Sand Dunes National Park, sure to draw crowds seeking to witness the natural phenomenon in person. According to the National Park Service, the creek was approximately 10 to 20 feet wide and a half-inch to two inches deep at the parking lot area as of April 21. Current flow data shows that discharge has since increased from 4.54 cfs then to 5.22 cfs on April 28, meaning that the creek will likely be a little more active than detailed in the last update. This is still quite a bit off of peak flow, which is around 40 cfs, likely to be hit in late May or early June. ....

Snow levels will hover between 5,000 and 6,000 feet and not much accumulation is expected below 6,000 feet. This will be a fairly weak first round of weather during an active forecast period. The biggest impacts will be across the mountains, Palmer Divide and Teller County. These areas could see a few inches of slushy snowfall for the Wednesday morning commute. COLORADO SPRINGS: Low: 29; High: 45. Overnight rain and snow showers will be possible across the Pikes Peak Region through very early Wednesday morning. Up to 1 of snow could fall across northern neighborhoods. Wednesday will be mostly dry during the day, with a few rain and snow showers by late Wednesday night. ....
