Ohio lawmakers are currently considering a number of changes to state elections law, with one of the proposals dealing with the use of ballot drop boxes.
House Bill 294, known as the âOhio Election Security and Modernization Act,â would prohibit counties from placing drop boxes anywhere besides at the boards of elections offices. Voters would only be able to drop off absentee ballots during the 10 days preceding an election, compared to the full absentee voting period use ....

COVID caused Census to be late, possibly delaying new city council map

A commission charged with drawing new Columbus City Council member residential districts will be pressed by unanticipated delays in receiving needed U.S. Census Bureau population counts for city neighborhoods.
The problem could squeeze the drafting process in ways not contemplated when voters approved the plan in 2018.
The new commission is still scheduled to begin its work this month when the needed population data from the 2020 Census typically would have been released. But in mid-February, the Census Bureau announced that it had pushed back the delivery date until Sept. 30, which is just three months before the council is required to vote on a new residential district map for its members. ....

Nine submit applications to become Franklin County elections director

Nine people, including the current elections director in Lorain County and a couple of employees in Franklin County Auditor (and former county elections director) Michael Stinziano’s office, have applied to become the next director of the Franklin County Board of Elections.
The deadline for applications was Friday from individuals interested in replacing Ed Leonard, who resigned from the post earlier this month to become an assistant to incoming Franklin County Prosecutor Gary Tyack.
Applicants being considered for the position include:
• Zach Manifold, deputy chief of staff in the Franklin County Auditor’s Office. He served as interim director of the Franklin County elections board for several months in 2016 and was manager of absentee ballots in that office from March 2015-March 2019. ....
