Independent pharmacies struggle with low payments, confusing fees

We re different. Whole Health is the only independent pharmacy on Cape Cod, an increasingly rare type of business that a study released last month indicates has been facing an uphill fight in a David vs. Goliath battle. The study by the Massachusetts Independent Pharmacists Association concluded that reimbursement to the state s independent pharmacies was inadequate. Loopholes in the overall Massachusetts Managed Care Program, mandatory steering of customers to mail-order specialty pharmacies, low dispensing fees and retroactive discounts have put independent pharmacies in a financial bind, according to the study. Furthermore, it found that taxpayers were overcharged an estimated $25 million for MassHealth Managed Care claims from 2018-19.

Upper Cape Tech staff were told Monday there would be a vaccination clinic for employees On Tuesday, they were told otherwise

BOURNE Plans for an independent pharmacy to host a COVID-19 vaccination clinic Friday at Upper Cape Cod Regional Technical School for the school’s staff and eligible members of the public have been canceled. Roger Forget, superintendent of Upper Cape Tech, said he sent an email to school employees Monday about the clinic, which was set to be conducted by Whole Health Pharmacy in Hyannis. But on Tuesday, Forget said, he told employees that he received word that the state Department of Public Health said the clinic would not occur. “The disappointment and frustration felt by the staff is just overwhelming,” he said. “Our little clinic has been stopped. I can’t for the life of me understand why.”

Cape Cod seniors step up to volunteer during pandemic

Directing traffic on a cold and gray day during a recent vaccination clinic in Orleans, retired physical therapist Robin McIntyre, of Bourne, said she felt an obligation to volunteer to help during the pandemic. “This is bigger than just little Cape Cod, for sure, said McIntyre, whose neon vest with the initials MRC identified her as a volunteer for the Cape Cod Medical Reserve Corps. This is a huge thing for our world. It’s important to be doing this.” McIntyre is one of a small army of volunteers, mostly retirees, standing between Cape Codders and COVID-19. Local officials hope to expand their already growing ranks as vaccination efforts ramp up on Cape Cod.
