NHS coronavirus staff absences have almost quadrupled since September

The number of NHS staff off sick or self-isolating due to coronavirus has almost quadrupled since September, leaked figures reveal.
As many as 46,400 doctors and nurses are currently off work because of the virus, reports The Independent, which is almost four times as high as the 12,382 reported on September 2.
Overall, almost one in 10 staff (8.6 per cent) were off in the most recent available NHS figures – a total of 95,500 – with around half of them linked to Covid-19.
This includes people infected with the virus themselves or those who have to self-isolate because they have been in contact with a confirmed case. ....

WHO warns new virus strains will be Europe's 'tipping point'

The majority of new cases in the UK were from the new variants.
WHO Europe director Hans Kluge said the current situation was “a tipping point in the course of the pandemic” and the continent needed to strengthen social-distancing measures.
“Without increased control to slow its spread, there will be an increased impact on already stressed and pressured health facilities,” he said.
Helge Braun, an ally of German Chancellor Angela Merkel, said
the country’s lockdown might need to be extended in light
of the mutant variant, while French Health Minister Agnes Buzyn said it was unlikely the continent would be able to keep the British strain at bay. ....

The new, more contagious strain of Covid-19 that first emerged in the southeast of England was already spreading rapidly even during the nation’s second lockdown in November, according to a report published Thursday by scientists at Imperial College London.
