HAVANA, July 2 (Xinhua) Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel on Friday urged local authorities and the public to make preparations as Hurricane Elsa nears the Caribbean nation. Tropical storm Elsa is approaching Cuba. We have given instructions to territories for them to put into practice their plans against disasters, with extreme caution due to the pandemic (COVID-19), he said on Twitter.
Diaz-Canel called for discipline to avoid casualties in light of the potential damage the hurricane could cause.
It comes as the Cuban government strives to contain its sharpest rise in deaths and hospitalizations due to COVID-19 since the start of the sanitary emergency in the country in March 2020.

Havana, July 1 : Cuba reported on Wednesday 2,970 new Covid-19 infections in the last day and 14 deaths, including a two-year-old child, bringing the total caseload to 190,993 and the death toll to 1,284.
Director of hygiene and epidemiology of the Public Health Ministry Francisco Duran said in his daily report that 15,502 people are currently hospitalized, marking the highest figure to date, Xinhua reported.
The western province of Matanzas registered 790 infections in the last day and continues to be the epicenter of the pandemic on the island, with an incidence rate of 656.3 per 100,000 inhabitants.
