Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Rubisco is arguably the most abundant–and most important–protein on Earth. This enzyme drives photosynthesis, the process that plants use to convert sunlight into energy to fuel crop growth and yield. Rubisco’s role is to capture and fix carbon dioxide (CO 2) into sugar that fuels the plant’s activities. However, as much as Rubisco benefits plant growth, it also can operate at a notoriously slow pace that creates a hindrance to photosynthetic efficiency. About 20 percent of the time Rubisco fixes oxygen (O 2) molecules instead of CO ....
Scientists show drought-tolerant crops need skin in the game 16 March 2021 The hope is that with the appropriate investment in research, applied science and practical applications, our research can help to develop drought tolerant and more water-use efficient crops. The Holy Grail of crops that can survive long heat waves and drought may be a step closer with scientists finding a way to precisely measure a plant s water loss through its skin. There are only two ways that crops and other plants lose water: through their skin, otherwise known as the cuticle, and the stomata. Until now, scientists have calculated a plant s dehydration levels based primarily on the stomata, which are pores on leaves that release water vapour and take in carbon dioxide - otherwise known as a gas exchange. ....
Directing biosynthesis online Introduction Welcome You are warmly invited to join us online in April 2021. The Directing Biosynthesis conference has been a key meeting in the biosynthetic research calendar for over a decade and is set to be a highlight in 2021 for the community of researchers interested in the biosynthesis of natural products. Organised by the Royal Society of Chemistry, the 2021 conference will host some of the leading researchers from around the world. Networking and discussion are an important part of Directing Biosynthesis meetings and this remains true for the online forum. The conference promises to be a great forum for established and early-career scientists, post-graduate students and industrial researchers to network with each other and build strong collaborations for the future. ....
