Auckland high schools short 30 teachers this year, 4000 students could go without

Demand for secondary teachers was also projected to grow year-on-year out to 2025, due to the number of primary school students moving into secondary school.
However, teachers were still needed in hard-to-staff subjects such as te reo Māori and STEM and in the Māori medium sector and in certain schools.
In 2018, the ministry forecast being short of 260 primary school teachers and 130 secondary teachers in 2019.
Ellen MacGregor-Reid, the ministry’s early learning and student achievement deputy secretary, said the gap in supply and demand had “reduced greatly” compared to previous years.

Condonement, free resits and widened classification borders: The UCL No Detriment policy 2021

UCL has confirmed the full package that will make up this year’s no detriment policy. Their approach involves a number of actions targeting coursework, exams and retroactive safety nets.
The university has broken down the safety net into three stages that they believe will ensure there will be no academic detriment towards students: 1. Preparing and planning for assessments; 2. Supporting you during assessments and 3. Ensuring fair classification.
Many students are already aware of the new academic borderlines that will be in place, widening all boundaries by one per cent. However, a huge step that UCL has taken is the introduction of a ‘condonement’ policy which will allow students who are “on a programme with formal progression requirements, such as a Bachelors, MSci/MEng, and some two-year PGT Masters programmes, to progress to next year”. Alongside condonement, there will now be extra time in all exams, the opportunity to self certify extenuating circumstance ....

Teacher training in NI 'reinforces sectarian divide'

BBC News
By Robbie Meredith
Published
How teachers are trained in Northern Ireland reinforces educational division and duplication along sectarian lines.
That is argued in a newly published briefing paper from Ulster University s Unesco centre of education.
It calls for a radical review and redesign of initial teacher education in Northern Ireland.
There are four institutions in Northern Ireland who provide Bachelor of Education (BEd) or Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) degrees.
They are Stranmillis University College, St Mary s University College and the schools of education at Queen s University (QUB) and Ulster University (UU).
Demand for places in these institutions is consistently high and the application process is very competitive, the Ulster University (UU) report into community division and student separation in initial teacher education said. ....
