In May 2018, five mining groups agreed to pay R5 billion to settle a class-action suit involving thousands of mineworkers who contracted tuberculosis (TB) and silicosis at work. The high court in Johannesburg approved this settlement in 2019. But two years later, the trust set up to administer the compensation process still hasn’t paid them.
According to the Justice For Miners campaign, fewer than 10 claimants have been paid by the Tshiamiso Trust so far. There remains a backlog of more than 100 000 unprocessed claims from sick miners. The trust can only settle these claims once the Medical Bureau of Occupational Diseases (MBOD) has processed them in the statutory compensation system. ....

A new short-course Tuberculosis (TB) Preventive Therapy (TPT) has been outdoored for the first time at Agormanya in the Lower Manya Krobo Municipality of the Eastern Region.
The new fixed-dose combination (FDC) with rifapentine and isoniazid termed “3HP” prevents people infected with TB from developing active TB and reduces the number of pills that people who need the treatment have to take every week from nine to three.
The launch in Ghana follows a recent global procurement agreement with Macleods made possible by the IMPAACT4TB project, funded by Unitaid and led by the Aurum Institute. ....

Aurum Institute in collaboration with the Ghana Health Service, has launched a new Tuberculosis Preventive Therapy (TPT) drug at the Agomanya St Martin’s de Porres Catholic Hospital in the Lower Manya Krobo Municipality in the Eastern Region.
The drug, 3HP, which was funded by Unitaid is to protect people most vulnerable to developing active TB.
The target group would receive a quality–assured, affordable, short-course TB preventive treatment known as 3HP, consisting of two antibiotics that treat TB (isoniazid and rifapentine), given weekly for three months. ....
