Research into better opportunities for organic spinach cultivation
Growing organic frozen spinach is quite a challenge, how is it best approached? Researchers at the Faculty of Bioscience Engineering (UGent) found more efficient methods that guarantee better chances of success for organic spinach. For example, the density and inter-row distance between the plants is of crucial importance.
The consumption of organic products in Europe is on the rise. A popular vegetable that cannot meet that demand is organic spinach. This is mainly due to the difficult weed control in this fragile leafy vegetable sown with close row spacing, and the strict quality requirements of the cultivated product. The cut product cannot contain weeds as they affect the taste, odour, toxicity and stringiness of the end product. It is therefore quite a challenge to grow spinach without excessive manual labour, especially in organic farming, says Prof. Benny De Cauwer.
Short lecture by Aya Ezawa
The awarding of the Pieter de la Court medals are usually accompanied by a lecture to explore one or more of the Pieter de la Court themes. This year Aya Ezawa, Diversity Officer at Leiden University, talked about how the university works on diversity and inclusivity. “One of my tasks as Diversity Officer is to translate our ambitions to create a diverse and inclusive learning and working environment into action. It’s one thing to have this shared ideal, but quite another to actually make it happen. … So, what can we do? Inclusion is first and foremost a matter of approach: avoid taking yourself and your own experience for granted, and exercise openness and empathy in approaching others. Recognize that you are not the best judge of what another person experiences or feels – there is much we can learn from each other.”
