Excavators, dump trucks and yellow hard hats will be dotting the riverfront this summer, as the Grand Rapids City Commission on Tuesday approved the first phase of the eastside trunk sewer relocation.
The Business Journal previously reported the eastside trunk sewer relocation is the next step in the Market Avenue corridor project, which includes the redevelopment of the recreational river’s edge, the potential development of a 12,000-seat amphitheater and a projected 1,750 housing units in the corridor.
The city teamed up with community partners in November on a unique agreement to move the eastside trunk sewer a long-standing barrier to the future redevelopment of the Market Avenue corridor. Kamminga & Roodvoets Inc. earned the bid award for phase one and expects to kick off the $8 million project in April and complete it by spring 2022. ....

GRAND RAPIDS, MI The Morton Hotel, an extended-stay, dog-friendly hotel in downtown Grand Rapids, is scheduled to open March 15.
The 25-room hotel is located inside the nearly century old, 13-story Morton building at the corner of Ionia Avenue NW and Monroe Center. It includes a range of room-styles, from studios to penthouses, each of which includes long-term stay accommodations such as kitchens, washers and dryers.
It also boasts a play area and washing station for dogs.
“We are thrilled to be bringing new life to the historic Morton Hotel for dogs and people alike,” Ross Bartlett, regional general manager overseeing the Morton Hotel, said in a statement. “We identified a need for a comfortable place to travel with dogs in Grand Rapids. City-owned property along the Grand River could be sold and become the site of a 14-thousand seat amphitheater under an agreement passed unanimously by Grand Rapids commissioners Tuesday. 
The Grand Rapids-Kent County Convention/Arena Authority (CAA), the board that oversees Van Andel Arena and DeVos Place, will spend the months ahead looking into the development at 201 Market Avenue SW further before officially closing on the estimated $24.5 million sale.  ....
