At the peak of a Virginia summer, the difference between the sun and shade is stark. High urban temperatures can be dangerous in the capital city of Richmond. Trees can provide substantial cooling, pull pollution from air and water, and beautify neighborhoods. But in Richmond and other U.S. cities, the racist housing policy of redlining has resulted in less tree canopy for many neighborhoods with predominantly Black residents, making them now hotter in the summer. ....

For the food festival’s fifth iteration, she, Kelli Lemon, and Amy Wentz have pulled together a 10-day culinary journey featuring over 70 Black-owned businesses around town, running from March 5 to 14. “With 27 food trucks and 43 brick-and-mortar establishments, we have a full menu of experiences for folks this year,” Bowen says. “We are trying to connect the culture of Richmond to the cuisine of Richmond, and that means going beyond soul food to include the full array of foods Black people provide this city.” ....
Richmond Registrar Removed From Office Kirk Showalter, Richmond s General Registrar for over two decades, was removed from office by the city s board of elections Monday night. The Richmond Board of Elections voted 2-1 to remove the city s top elections official Monday evening. Board members heard public comment on the matter, and then went into a closed session for three hours to deliberate and make a decision. Richmond’s votes took weeks to count, and partially reported results for some local races displayed misleading and sometimes incorrect numbers for hours or even days. Some campaigns raised concerns with Showalter’s office that they say still haven’t been properly answered months later. ....
