View from the Hill: Dedication held for Charles Hardcastle Kentucky Building

A building that opened on WKU’s campus back in 1939 now bears the name of Charles Hardcastle, a former Bowling Green mayor and WKU alumnus who hopes his family’s gift will impact generations to come.
“You can’t rewrite history but you learn from history cause it has a tendency to repeat itself.”
Charles Hardcastle is leaving his mark on WKU.
“I think it’s very important that we understand the history. The good and the bad.”
Hardcastle wasn’t even born when construction began on the Kentucky Building in 1931. Delayed by the Great Depression, it didn’t fully open until 1939, 12 years before the Alvaton native arrived as a student. ....

View from the Hill: Bike4Alz team begins trip next week

“When I went through recruitment I remember all the guys talking about it and immediately I knew this is something I want to do.”
WKU senior Justin Geilear will be thinking of his 87-year-old grandfather who suffers from Alzheimer’s when taking part in Bike4Alz this summer.
“He’s been getting worse as time goes on of course but the one thing he always remembers is that I am biking across the country for Alzheimer’s.”
Justin is one of 12 riders and two drivers who are continuing a Fiji tradition that began in 2010.
More than half of them were prepared to ride last summer when the pandemic changed their plans. ....

View from the Hill: Child welfare center launches research initiative

“Improving the lives of families and children is the mission of the Center for Child Welfare Education and Research which was established here at WKU in 2019. Now the Center is launching research that will better the lives of child welfare workers here in southcentral Kentucky.
“There are a number of centers focused on child welfare in the country but we are the first in Kentucky and we’re really excited about that.”
“To us it matters that we’re building kind of an alliance and we’re bringing the community together.”
One of the Center’s first grant funded efforts is called the Kentucky Child Welfare Workforce Wellness Initiative. The two-year project involves using a device to track how local child welfare workers respond to psychological stresses. ....

Dogs Trust Ilfracombe is offering dog-lovers the chance to find out just what it takes to look after our four-legged friends who have found themselves without a forever home.
The centre is giving local community groups the opportunity to hear all about the work of Dogs Trust, from matching people with their perfect canine companion to what daily life is like for the staff and dogs, through to fundraising and the vital role volunteers play - including fostering dogs and helping at the centre with everything from laundry to dog-walking. ....

A WKU senior says her passion for both African American history and journalism have fueled her efforts to reach as big an audience as possible.
