Sentencing: Preston Crown Court heard the case A man who was jailed for sending threatening messages to Barrow residents has abandoned his appeal against his conviction. Peter John Cunliffe, 50, was sentenced to 22 weeks in prison after sending offensive, indecent, obscene or menacing messages to three residents in Barrow in February. But Cunliffe did not accept the conviction and sentence and lodged an appeal. At Preston Crown Court, Judge Heather Lloyd said his decision to abandon the appeal was a sensible solution.’ She said: “I think the magistrates and I were quite surprised that the sentence was as low as it was. He may have had more to serve, had he continued with the appeal.” ....
The Government has published its action plan to better protect journalists from threats of violence and intimidation, which includes every UK police force being given access to a designated journalist safety liaison officer. Abuse aimed at UK journalists going about their work has included them being punched, threatened with knives, forcibly detained and subjected to rape and death threats, the Government said. In the past year two men have been jailed for threatening regional journalist Amy Fenton on Facebook while two female journalists in Belfast, Patricia Devlin and Allison Morris, have been the subject of threats both online and in graffiti. ....
