It is said that medieval scholastic philosophers debated how many angels can dance on the head of a pin. If so, they didnât have anything on the amorphous and tendentious deliberations of Facebook regarding who is allowed to post on its social network, most pertinently the former president of the United States, Donald J. Trump. On January 7, the day after the Capitol riot, Facebook blocked Trump from posting indefinitely. It then kicked the matter to its oversight board saying, âYou decide.â On Wednesday, the board replied, âNo, no - you decide.â If Facebook had set out to demonstrate that it has awesome power over speech in the United States, including speech at the core of the nationâs political debate, and is wielding that power arbitrarily, indeed has no idea what its own rules truly are or should be, it wouldnât have handled the question any differently. ....

Facebook Oversight Board Upholds Permanent Trump Ban For Creating Serious Risk Of Violence Published: May 5, 2021 Facebook s oversight board on Wednesday decided to uphold the company s indefinite suspension of former president Donald Trump, claiming that Trump’s posts during the Capitol riot severely violated Facebook’s rules and encouraged and legitimized violence. The Board also found Facebook violated its own rules by imposing a suspension that was ‘indefinite.’ This penalty is not described in Facebook’s content policies. It has no clear criteria and gives Facebook total discretion on when to impose or lift it. Oversight Board (@OversightBoard) May 5, 2021

Facebook Trump ban upheld but Oversight Board refuses to make the toughest decision Chris Davies - May 5, 2021, 8:15am CDT The Facebook Oversight Board has found the social network was right to restrict former President Trump’s account in early January 2021, though has insisted on a review of the indefinite suspension the then-President faced on Facebook. The results of the hotly-anticipated – and undoubtedly divisive – Oversight Board investigation centered on Facebook’s reaction to incendiary posts by Trump during the DC Capitol Building riot on January 6. Then, while the 2020 election results were still being contested, an insurrectionist mob forcibly entered the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C. Five people died, and more were injured. Multiple investigations into the attack are underway, with the FBI having already charged numerous people for their role in the violence. ....
