Wrentham car break-in leads to police pursuit, suspects at large

WRENTHAM, Mass. (WLNE)- Police in Massachusetts are looking for two suspects who lead police on a brief pursuit after breaking into a car, and stealing a pocketbook on Saturday.
Chief Bill McGrath said the department received a call reporting that two suspects were seen breaking into the window of a car, and stole a pocketbook from inside before they fled.
The victim said the suspects were in a black Dodge Charger with California plates.
McGrath said seconds later, Wrentham officers spotted the suspect’s car on Route 1A at Route 121. The officers stopped the Dodge Charger on South Street. McGrath said the two cruisers positioned themselves in front and behind the suspect’s car, to prevent them from from escaping. ....

Vaccination registration opens to RI residents 65+ on Monday

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) – The Rhode Island Department of Health (RIDOH) announced those 65 and older will be able to book appointments for the COVID-19 vaccine starting Monday.
The Health Department said those who would like to register should visit VaccinateRI.org.  Anyone unable to register online can get help by calling 844-930-1779.
A RIDOH spokesperson said going forward, the call center will be open on weekdays from 7:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and weekends from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. ....

Raimondo defends state's targeted vaccination strategy


Raimondo said the targeted approach was always the plan, and said the results speak for themselves.
Joined by Dr. Nicole Alexander-Scott and RI National Guard Major General Chris Callahan, Raimondo said, “Our strategy was to be very targeted to the most vulnerable to make sure that our hospital were not overflowing. And I want Rhode Islanders to be reassured that on that score we’re doing incredibly well. Better than Massachusetts and Connecticut. Better than most states in American and much better than the national average.”
According to Raimondo, from January to February, Rhode Island saw a 46% decline in hospitalizations. Raimondo credited this to older residents getting the vaccine first. ....

Alton Wiley, Rhode Island's first Black judge dies at 91


PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) – Alton Wiley, Rhode Island’s first Black judge, passed away on Wednesday.
Wiley, 91, made history as the first Black judge to sit on the state’s District and Superior Courts.
Gov. Gina Raimondo offered her condolences in a tweet reading, “I was saddened to hear of Judge Wiley’s passing. A veteran, a brilliant legal mind, and RI’s first Black judge, he helped pave the way for a new generation of talented, diverse lawyers to serve on our courts. I’m keeping his family in my thoughts during this difficult time.”
Senator Jack Reed wrote in a statement, “I am deeply saddened by the passing of Judge Wiley and my heart goes out to his family and loved ones.  On the track, in the Army, and on the bench, Alton Wiley’s exemplary talent, skill, and leadership stood out.  He was a star.” ....
