Biggest profits on record for house sellers

In November, Jacinda Ardern said: It just cannot keep increasing at the rate that it is when asked about rising house prices.
Houses sold in the first part of this year made their owners the highest level of profit on record, new CoreLogic data reveals.
The property research company’s latest Pain and Gain Report found the median national gain made by people selling an existing house between January and March was $315,000, up from $291,000 at the end of last year.
At the same time, the proportion of profit-making resales increased to 98.9 per cent, which was up from 98.4 per cent late last year and the highest reading in the 25 years the data has been collected. ....

CoreLogic’s most recent Pain & Gain Report revealed that 16.8% of unit owners sold their properties for a loss in the December quarter of 2020, which was more than double the losses for houses (7.6%):
Loss making unit sales are more than double that for detached houses.
The latest rental data also showed that unit rents fell 1.7% nationally in the year to March, driven by heavy falls across Melbourne and Sydney:
Annual rents fell across Melbourne, but were turbo-charged across Darwin and Perth.
Fed up with accumulating losses, unit owners have begun dumping their holdings on the market, according to CoreLogic. ....
