Quebec's new proposed language bill has English communities in western Quebec concerned

OTTAWA
English communities in the Pontiac are concerned about a major push by the Quebec government to strengthen and protect the French language across the province.
In Shawville and a majority of the Pontiac region, English is the predominant language.
Well, we’re not very happy about it. I don’t see why the government has to do that to protect their language,” said Sandra Murray, mayor of Shawville.
They want our tax dollars but with this new law they don’t want to send us any information in English. So if they want our money, they should accommodate us in our language. ....

Bilingual municipalities call for 'balance and 'respect' ahead of Quebec language reform

The Association of Suburban Municipalities, representing 13 of the 15 municipalities with bilingual status on the island of Montreal, issued a news release Wednesday afternoon, calling for the status to be maintained, even where demographics have changed.
“For us, balance means strengthening the French language without taking away the rights of citizens in bilingual municipalities, said Beny Masella, mayor of Montreal West and head of the association.
“We fully support the social and political consensus in favour of protecting and strengthening the status of the French language in Quebec. At the same time, we are committed to protecting the gains that are important to the citizens of our municipalities,” the news release read. ....

Experts worry AstraZeneca death will deter others from getting vaccinated

A 54-year-old woman has died in the province after receiving the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine, Quebec s public health director Horacio Arruda confirmed Tuesday.
“We just had our first patient who has died of a thrombosis, cerebral thrombosis, following vaccination from AstraZeneca, said Arruda in a news conference. This is an event that is rare. We knew that it might happen. We have a risk of default one in every 100,000 doses today.
Arruda said it was a risk the province knew it was taking, and that the benefits outweigh the risks.
It puts a face on a statistic and for us, statistics are always people, and there s no way of knowing who the person is who is going to react that way, he added. People don t get vaccinated to die. It s rare, and we can t predict it. But for the population at large, vaccination remains beneficial. ....
