Construction Projects Underway at St Andrews

Five construction projects are underway at St. Andrews State Park. Campground renovations, a restroom at the lagoon, a new playground at the lagoon, new facilities at the primitive group camp and new picnic pavilions at the jetty are in the works. Additional projects will follow in the next few years.  The Florida Department of Environmental Protection welcomes the opportunity to make improvements to the facilities at St. Andrews State Park. We appreciate the patience and understanding of visitors. While this project may present a temporary inconvenience, it will provide valuable amenity improvements at St. Andrews State Park. Campground Renovations Hurricane Michael left its mark on the campground at St. Andrews State Park. The category five hurricane caused extensive damage from wind and storm surge. Many of the trees were snapped into the shape of an A-frame, while others were uprooted altogether, causing significant damage to plumbing and electric pedestals.

A Three-Day Road Trip Exploring Florida s Spanish History

This year marks the bicentennial of the official transfer of Florida, once a Spanish territory, to the United States in 1821. The Spanish ruled these shores off and on since Juan Ponce de León’s 1513 landing, but there are few signs of this legacy, save for the occasional historic site and place names like Boca Raton and Islamorada. This three-day Northern Florida road trip strings together landmarks with natural areas, all with unexpected connections to the state’s Spanish heritage. What to drive To truly get in the spirit as you drive along the Gulf of Mexico or under Spanish moss–draped canopy roads, you’ll need a convertible.

Friends of St Andrews State Park in Panama City turns 30 years old

PANAMA CITY BEACH For 30 years, St. Andrews State Park has relied on its friends. A citizen support organization, the 501(c)3 nonprofit group Friends of St. Andrews State Park formed in 1991. Ed and Lisa Keppner were the original organizers; both biologists, they did a survey of plants in the park. Today, the Native Plant Nursery at the park still helps to maintain the landscaping needs. Anne Ake became part of the organization in 1993 when she was serving on the board of the Visual Arts Center of Northwest Florida (now known as the Panama City Center for the Arts). She spoke with Karen Tucker, who was then doing public relations and outreach for District 1 State Parks, about holding a joint outdoor art show in the park.
