Q&A with Hashim Coates | Former Democratic politco fights for Black- and Brown-owned cannabis businesses


When it comes to talking about minority business owners in the cannabis industry, longtime Democratic operative Hashim Coates wants to make sure Black Brown and Red Badged is front and center of the conversation. 
The group, founded in 2019, represents Black and brown red badge holders, shorthand for those who own a licensed cannabis company. In February, BBRB hired Coates as its executive director.
We caught up with him to discuss his roots in the Colorado political scene, his vision for Black- and brown-owned cannabis businesses and his interest in the cannabis industry.

Family Visitor Programs names Andrew Romanoff as executive director


Swanson served as the nonprofit’s executive director for 34 of its 38 years.
The agency provides home visitation services to pregnant women and to parents of young children residing in the Aspen to Parachute region and is headquartered in Glenwood Springs.
The agency also provides the Personal Responsibility Education Program, using an evidence-based curriculum to prevent teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections, the release states.
Romanoff served in the Colorado House of Representatives from 2001 to 2009.
He was Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate in 2010, losing to incumbent Michael Bennet in the primary election.
His 2014 bid for Colorado’s 6th congressional district in 2014, losing to incumbent Republican Mike Coffman. Romanoff made a second run for the U.S. Senate in 2020, losing to former Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper. ....

Housing advocate Javier Mabrey launches bid for Democratic nod in Colorado's House District 1


Democrat Javier Mabrey, an attorney and co-founder of a group that defends Coloradans facing eviction, announced Tuesday that he s running in next year s election for House District 1, a southwest Denver seat held by term-limited Democratic state Rep. Susan Lontine.
Raised by a single mother whose only source of income was a disability check, Mabrey, 30, said he wants to bring his experience growing up in the district — dependent on food stamps, his family faced eviction and was homeless for a stretch — to advocate for economic and racial justice at the state Capitol.
Too many Coloradans struggle to get by,” Mabrey said. “Colorado families deserve better — they deserve someone who will fight for them. Everyone should have access to good paying jobs, affordable housing and health care.” ....
