In the 80 years since Mercer’s grandfather founded the Hillmount Garden Center on the outskirts of Belfast, on Northern Ireland’s east coast, the business has never faced as many obstacles as it does now. 
The past year of lockdowns has seen a demand for plants and garden furniture outstrip supply, while staff have been furloughed. Now, complicated post-Brexit trading arrangements are acutely hitting the horticultural sector.

“The word ‘nationalist’ almost makes you sound like a terrorist.” Campbell said. “People often kept quiet about it. The SNP used to be classed as a fringe lunatic party  but look at them now.”
In a 2014 referendum on the matter of Scottish independence, 55% of voters decided to stay part of the United Kingdom. In the days leading up to the referendum, the English press reflected panic at the growing “Yes” poll lead.
But since Brexit and the election of Boris Johnson who most Scots don’t like and didn’t vote for support for independence has climbed. Some polls suggest that pro-independence parties could gain a narrow majority in the Scottish parliament on Thursday, keeping the issue of a second referendum o ....

Armenia's winemakers struggle to recover from war


Armenia went into mourning ahead of Christmas week. An estimated 3,000 Armenian troops died in several weeks of fighting in the Nagorno-Karabakh region. Azerbaijan gained control of much of the disputed territory, and Russia brokered a ceasefire that s held so far. Armenians are struggling to come to terms with the aftermath and that includes winemakers. Reporter Andrew Connelly was recently in Nagorno-Karabakh, where he spoke with some of them.
