Marshall Health to offer free HIV testing, COVID-19 vaccination event April 10


HUNTINGTON — Marshall Health, in collaboration with the Cabell-Huntington Health Department and the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources, will offer free HIV tests and COVID-19 vaccines from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 10, at the health department at 703 7th Ave. in Huntington.
“For the health of our entire community, it’s important to continue HIV testing and COVID-19 vaccinations,” said Dr. Andrea Lauffer, Marshall Health pediatrician and medical director for Cabell County Schools.
The testing and vaccines are free (insurance will not be billed) and quick. No appointments are necessary. There is no age restriction for the confidential HIV tests (parental consent is not required by law), but individuals must be 18 or older to receive a COVID-19 vaccine. Free TTA bus transportation to the health department is available, and swag bags will be distributed while supplies last. ....

Editorial: Students need to be in school, but safely


Public school students in Cabell County might return to the classroom next week. Or maybe not.
Gov. Jim Justice has said he wants schools to open for five-days-per-week classes next week. Cabell school officials are trying to meet that goal, but it could be too much of a challenge.
Their concerns are legitimate. Most school buildings were not designed for the social distancing that is required in a pandemic. When they were built, the phrase “social distancing” hadn’t entered community conversations yet. Then there are the questions of ventilation and vaccination.
As noted by The Herald-Dispatch reporter Luke Creasy in an article in Sunday’s newspaper, Dr. Andrea Lauffer, the district’s chief health officer, told the county board of education last week that while the vaccine has shown some benefits around two weeks after the initial dose, it is most effective after the second dose is received, making it a six-week process from first dose to high ....
