Four by-elections were held on May 6, alongside the London mayoral and assembly elections. The council declared on Saturday that Labour and Cooperative Party candidates had won all four seats in Sydenham, New Cross, Catford South, and Bellingham. Lewisham has long been a Labour stronghold in London – the wins were in stark contrast with the Party’s overall performance in elections across England. Labour and Cooperative candidate Jack Lavery won in Sydenham with 2,634 votes, ahead of Conservative Helena Croft with 982 votes, and Green Party candidate Nick Lee’s 820. In the New Cross ward by-election, Labour’s Samantha Latouche won with 3,038 of the 5,078 votes cast. ....

Dogs are often referred to as man’s best friend, providing mental and emotional support to their owners, but researchers at Brescia University College (BUC) have found another animal ready to saddle up. An experimental psychologist at BUC, Dr. Anne Barnfield has been researching therapeutic riding and its benefits for mental health and wellness. “It’s fantastic. I always joke that we should just give everyone a horse in a way, it is incredible to see how well this works out and how much of a benefit can be had from this simple form of interaction.” Following 12 years of research, Barnfield says therapeutic riding (TR) and equine-assisted psychotherapy (EAP) is similar to work with dogs, but offers additional sets of benefits. ....

The Red Barn Players hope to get you feeling festive as they roll out another virtual production, this time partnered with four other theaters. The northern Beaver County theater group has pooled talents with New Castle Playhouse, Youngstown Playhouse, Area Community Theatre of Sharpsville and Greenville Area Community Theatre (G-ACT) for a fundraising Christmas concert presented online Dec. 16 through Dec. 31. Regional Theatre Christmas Celebration: A Virtual Collaboration debuts at 7 p.m. Wednesday, and will feature Christmas songs performed by members of each troupe, viewable at RaiseTheCurtains.org.
