Hillsdale Daily News LITCHFIELD - The Litchfield Area Historical Society recently opened their buildings and displays for the April meeting of the US 12 Heritage Trail Chapter NSDAR. The Daughters of the American Revolution are one of the largest women’s service groups in the world, with its member count over one million. The group promotes education, patriotism and preservation. Sandra Thomas and Nellie Cronk gave the ladies a tour of the one-room Sand Creek School and the barn and depot full of many artifacts of the area. The pledge of allegiance was said at the flag at the school. DAR member Nancy Sprow said among items of interest was a dress worn by Geneva Gates, a former Hillsdale Daily News family living editor, who wore the dress in the 1976 Bicentennial Celebration at the Hillsdale County Fairgrounds. Sprow said she remembered going to the fairgrounds then to see the wagon train for the occasion. ....
1932-2021 ⢠Union William Charles âBillâ Paxton, 88, of Union, died Feb. 26 at a retirement community in Baker City. A service will be held at a later time. Arrangements are by Daniels-Knopp Funeral, Cremation & Life Celebration Center, La Grande. Known as Bill, he was born July 8, 1932, in La Grande, to Charles William and Jennie Belle (Tracy) Paxton. He was raised and educated in Elgin and Union, graduating from Union High School in 1950. Bill joined the U.S. Air Force and served most of his enlistment in Germany as a teletypist. After his honorable discharge in 1955 as a senior staff sergeant, he went to the Portland Radio and TV College and earned an associate degree. In 1956 he married Ann Schmidt in Portland. Ann died in 1988 after 32 years of marriage. In 1990 Bill married Betty âBetsyâ Anderson in Union. ....

The green tones run the gamut: Not only are there gradations in leaf hue but also the tree bark ranges from the gray of beeches to the dark brown of sugar maples. Still, the controlled palette is part of a highly disciplined approach the landscape architect adopted for the estate, taking cues from age-old agrarian uses of the land. Separate driveways to the house and stables are bordered by trees, just as they would have been a century ago, when farmers lined up maples to facilitate harvesting their sap for syrup.
