LEWES, Del.- The Lewes City Manager said they will receive about $1.7 million dollars through the American Rescue Plan Act.
The city manager said they were given a lot of flexibility on how to use the money, but it focuses on COVID relief and getting back to post pandemic.
We are told they are thinking of using the funds to build a new bathroom to the Rollins Community Center, to resume public meetings.
Also, they want to add hardware to the center to continue live streams.
“We are trying to be very judicious on how we use the funds and make sure that we use it in a way that one that we can clearly relate to what we need to do to recover from COVID and two, make sure that we stretch it because we can,” Ann Marie Townshend, Lewes City Manager, said.

The recent Lewes City Council and BPW elections reaffirmed that Lewes certainly faces quality of life challenges, but that we also have capable leaders and knowlegeable voices in our community. There will be robust debate with diverse, passionate perspectives which, in my view, is necessary to make informed decisions.
I am optimistic we can all reason together and produce solutions for both the short- and long-term benefit of our community.
The voters of Lewes had three city council candidates who offered various talents, skills and policy positions. It was an engaging and energetic campaign, yet also a respectful one. Rob Morgan, Carolyn Jones and I discussed this on election day and agreed that we never felt like we were running “against” each other, but instead were making the case of why each of us had the right skill set and temperament to represent our wonderful town.

It has been an honor to serve the people of Lewes for nine years as a member of your city council. Lewes is a terrific town with wonderful, innovative, and caring citizens. Please participate in your government by attending meetings (virtually or, soon, in person at the city’s meeting room at the Rollins Center) and continue to give useful feedback to members of council and city boards, commissions, and committees. Government doesn’t work without citizen input!
I am gratified by the responsible, progressive decisions that council has made for our town over the past nine years. Lewes is in very good financial shape and has a professional and dedicated staff. Further, the city has made solid progress on any number of fronts, from its beautiful parks to its sparkling commercial district. Even the important issues facing Lewes - parking woes, inevitable climate change, preserving our history, to name just a few - are under productive
Complaint filed with the city’s board of ethics

Lewes resident Alicia Jones has lodged two complaints with the city’s board of ethics regarding lack of diversity in those serving the city, including people appointed to committees and commissions.
Board of Ethics Chair Mark Harris brought the complaints to mayor and city council’s April 26 meeting for discussion. As the complaints are not against a specific person, Harris said, the board is unable to take action.

With the summer season rapidly approaching, Lewes Mayor and City Council considered two issues affecting parking at the beach.
It is not uncommon to see cones or other objects placed in front of homes on Lewes Beach. Some are used to ensure a driveway isn’t blocked, while others purposely prevent parking in front of homes.
With parking enforcement officers planning to patrol the residential streets for the first time this summer, city officials are attempting to clearly state in city code what is not allowed.
