Cork City Council have had a ‘Digital Media Officer’ since December 2019, now the Local Authority has unveiled an ambitious 62-page ‘Digital Strategy’ An online citizen services portal, smart energy home testbed and extension of Cork city’s free public Wi-Fi offering are all actions contained in Cork city’s first digital strategy. Published today, 17th December 2020, Cork city’s digital strategy aspires to support citizens and businesses to realise the benefits of digitalisation. Co-created with city stakeholders, this collaborative strategy aims to make Cork the connected city – innovative, inclusive, and inspiring. This vision will be delivered through a roadmap of digital actions across 7 dimensions which take a holistic approach in developing a more digitally enabled city. [email protected] Cork’s iconic Daly (Shakey Bridge) re-opened to the public today having undergone significant repair and restoration, funded by the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport (DTTAS) and the National Transport Authority (NTA). Pic: Brian Lougheed The heritage bridge was formally re-opened Thursday December 17 by the Lord Mayor, Cllr Joe Kavanagh in a small Covid-compliant ceremony at noon. The refurbishment and conservation works, which cost over €1.7 million, were undertaken to address serious corrosion and extensive damage to the 50.9 metre suspension bridge. This is the third heritage bridge in the city to be refurbished in recent years and follows St Patrick’s Bridge and St Vincents Bridge on North Mall. ....
Cork s Daly Bridge, which connects Sunday s Well in the city with the Mardyke, has reopened. The bridge, known locally as the Shakey Bridge, is a 51-metre, steel suspension bridge spanning the north channel of the River Lee. It has undergone a €1.7m restoration, which has taken more than a year. The bridge was first opened in 1927. It quickly became known as the Shakey Bridge because of its famous wobble as pedestrians walked over it. Named after a local dairy merchant, Daly s Bridge was the biggest infrastructure project undertaken in Cork after the War of Independence. A structural report in 2011 raised major concern at the way rust had damaged the bridge and, in particular, its iron latticework. ....
