Pittsfield Residents, Officials Frustrated With Cell Tower Action Plan

PITTSFIELD, Mass. Residents, City Council members, and health officials are frustrated with the unfolding situation concerning a Verizon cell tower at 877 South St.
The tower was erected in August 2020 and has since driven large amounts of public comment in the open microphone segment of City Council meetings.
Alma Street resident Courtney Gilardi has been the primary spokesperson for the cell tower opposition and has had her 12-year-old daughter Amelia call into the meetings to speak about the symptoms she is experiencing such as nausea and sleep disturbances.
At Tuesday s City Council meeting, Health Director Gina Armstrong presented an official four-step alternative plan to address these concerns without the help of the state Department of Public Health, which offered the services of a Bureau of Environmental Health representative and then backed out.   ....

Documents obtained by NBC Bay Area’s Investigative Unit indicate that top Public Works financial officials were alerted back in 2018 that Recology had been overcharging garbage collection customers by millions of dollars.
City Attorney Dennis Herrera said Thursday that ousted DPW director Mohammed Nuru had learned about the overcharging by Recology, but he did not provide details.  “It was something that was known – DPW did nothing about it,” he said. “Recology knew about it at the time and did nothing about it.”

The plan to distribute toy vouchers instead of a drive-thru toy distribution is new and has been put together at the last minute, said Christmas Bureau Coordinator Sierra Heinen. Many different options were discussed as organizers tried to be fair in the amount given to each family and also tried to help as many as they could with limited funds.
The annual fundraising currently underway will pay for the toys and the books that organizers spent all year buying. Those now sit in storage, the plans to distribute them thwarted by the rising COVID-19 pandemic. Since those items still have to be paid for, there isn’t money in the budget to pay for toy vouchers.
