An Ambitious Tex-Mex Spot Brings Frito Pies and Frozen Palomas to Glover Park

Naomi Gallego has long been one of DC’s top pastry chefs. In the last two decades, she’s created desserts at Blue Duck Tavern, Le Diplomate, the late PS7’s and Vidalia, and the entire Neighborhood Restaurant Group. Now, she is turning her attention from Valrhona chocolate and panna cotta to queso and tacos. Tomorrow, May 5th, she’s opening Mijita’s Tex Mex inside Glover Park’s Social Beast , the mini-food-hall formerly known as Ghostline.

It’s not as left-field as it sounds. Gallego grew up in San Antonio, and once led the pastry team at the Four Seasons in Austin. Besides, she says, “this isn’t a far stretch from any educated cook’s background. I’m not doing French fine dining.” She’s spent the last year roaming Tex Mex spots around the country, seeking out brisket at Valentina’s in Austin, or sampling the award-winning flour tortillas at HomeState in ....

Johnny's Half Shell Closed, but You Can Take a Piece of the Restaurant Home

Johnny s Half Shell in Adams Morgan will close for good. Photograph by Jeff Elkins
Adams Morgan seafood spot Johnny’s Half Shell announced its permanent closure last October, after temporarily shuttering at the onset of the pandemic. If you’re among those mourning the loss of Ann Cashion and John Fulchino’s 21-year-old restaurant, you can purchase a souvenir from the dining room at a best-offer sale on Saturday, May 1, and Sunday, May 2, from 12 PM to 2 PM.
The restaurant already donated kitchen equipment to DC Central Kitchen and has arranged for some of the tableware to go to budding restauranteurs opening their own places. Everything else is up for grabs, including a big wooden ice box, iron railings crafted in New York, and a collage of flattened oyster cans constructed by Fulchino himself. Artifacts from previously closed restaurants like Cashion’s Eat Place and Taqueria Nacional on 14th Street will also be on sale. Rather than sticking a price tag on each ....

The recent passing of a longtime dining favorite went unannounced in a proper obituary. Allow me to imagine how it might have opened:
Johnny’s Half Shell, the beloved Chesapeake-influenced seafood restaurant that was opened by James Beard award-winning chef Ann Cashion and business partner John Fulchino in Dupont Circle in 1999, relocated to Capitol Hill in 2006 and moved to Adams Morgan in 2016, served its last dinner March 14. Fulchino, who announced the restaurant’s permanent closure on Facebook on Oct. 30 by chance, Cashion’s birthday said the decision to shutter was based in part on the impracticality of operating the restaurant as he and his best friend conceived it. Sure, they could have sent seafood out in boxes, but as Cashion put it this month, “Johnny’s is an experience,” and she ....

Restaurants are commercial entities, but they’re also intensely personal. Some, you become so close to that it feels like family. Thus, during this year of so many sad closures, everyone’s list of the places they miss the most will be different. Here’s mine.
Breadline
The
Washingtonian offices were about a ten minute walk to this bakery/sandwich/salad spot, which was founded by Mark Furstenberg in 1997. The bread master sold it long ago, but the blueprint remained and it was always jam-packed. And there was something so uplifting about getting a freshly fried fish sandwich or a prosciutto flatbread for a desk lunch, instead of a boring Cobb. Not surprisingly, as downtown has cleared out, it’s closed for “the foreseeable future.” ....
