Getting the Most from Sustainable Aviation Fuel – Advanced BioFuels USA

by Lloyd Ritter (Green Capitol LLC/Biofuels Digest) The aviation industry is currently responsible for less than 3% of total global carbon emissions, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA). But with air travel expected to increase by more than 60 percent (compared to pre-pandemic 2019 levels) by mid-century,[1] emissions will continue rising unless changes are made.

Administration officials including Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack as well as Rep. Julia Brownley (D-CA) are highlighting aviation as an important future market for advanced biofuels. Based on experience with the Renewable Fuel Standard, though, policy makers need to be clear that sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) will reduce carbon emissions. To incentivize those carbon reductions, federal policies must incorporate up-to-date, science-based assessments that assure stakeholders of sustainability. ....

EIA Expects Commercial Energy Use To Grow More Slowly Than Floorspace | Hellenic Shipping News Worldwide

EIA Expects Commercial Energy Use To Grow More Slowly Than Floorspace
In our Annual Energy Outlook 2021 (AEO2021), EIA projects that commercial floorspace will grow significantly over the next 30 years in the United States; however, energy use grows at a much slower pace. We assume wider adoption of commercial building sensors and controls over time and other factors, including energy efficiency gains and warmer weather, will all contribute to declines in commercial energy consumption to meet heating, ventilation, and lighting needs. Other commercial energy uses will increase. We project an 8% decline in the energy intensity of commercial buildings by 2050 (a measure of energy consumed per square foot of floorspace). Commercial floorspace grows by 33%, and total commercial energy use grows by 22% between 2020 and 2050. ....

The Holy Grail for Energy Investors

The Holy Grail for Energy Investors
I don’t often get into a row with my readers.
Most of the time, we’re in lockstep together when it comes to the U.S. energy sector.
Together, we’ve uncovered the most lucrative energy investments simply by recognizing a situation long before it bears fruit.
I know my veteran readers will remember us discussing the potentially wild profits from tight oil resources in the lower 48 states years before the shale boom ignited in the Barnett and Bakken plays.
So when I found myself in a recent conversation over our future transition away from fossil fuels, I was shocked to learn that one reader wasn’t buying it. ....

Comparing the actual US grid to the one predicted 15 years ago
Source: By John Timmer, ARS Technica • Posted: Thursday, April 15, 2021
Demand and carbon emissions are way down, renewables far more common than expected.
On Monday, the Department of Energy’s Lawrence Berkeley Lab released a report entitled “Halfway to Zero,” referring to a goal of a zero-emission US electric grid. The report’s headline claim is a bit bogus, in that we’ve not cut our emissions in half relative to any point in history. Instead, they’re down to half of where they were projected to be in a report issued back in 2005. ....
