Litter pickers aiming to highlight contaminated bins

A LITTER picking group has launched a new crusade to highlight contaminated bins.
While recycling is at the forefront of a greener lifestyle, encouraged by many different groups and bodies, the practice is not adhered to by many people.
Litter picking groups across Bolton cite hundreds of cases where bins are contaminated with the wrong waste - making the recycling process harder of impossible.
One litter picker, Andy Capstick, a member of Astley Bridge Litter Picking group, said any given Bolton alley will throw up several bins where homeowners have put waste in the incorrect bins.
And there are very often no repercussions for offenders, meaning that people will still carry on cross-contaminating their waste. ....

River clean-up in Bolton prompts arrival of heron

A GROUP of litter pickers who cleared a heavily polluted section of the River Croal were delighted when a heron immediately returned to the area shortly after they finished.
Andy Capstick, a member of Astley Bridge Litter Picking group, was clearing a stretch of the river in Rumworth, as the group often ventures across the borough to tackle well-known fly-tipping hotspots.
During their visit, they found all sorts of household waste, including chairs, pillows and house bricks. Bags of human faeces along with countless bottles, cans and other plastic packaging was pulled from the river too.
As the group were putting away their gear, Andy noticed a heron had appeared in the river - and he said the sighting of the bird made it all worthwhile. ....
