Scottish independence: Nicola Sturgeon does not want referendum, says ex-Scottish secretary

Nicola Sturgeon does not want an independence referendum, according to a Tory former Scottish secretary, but is using it to distract from her “abysmal” record.
Lord Forsyth of Drumlean said the First Minister and SNP leader would only want a vote when she was sure she could win it, and he claimed support was on the decline.
He also criticised Boris Johnson s failure to travel north of the border and make the case for the Union.
Mr Johnson s conspicuous absence was queried numerous times in the run up to the recent election to the Scottish Parliament.
Lord Forsyth made the comments as peers continued to debate the Queen’s Speech, which set out the Government’s legislative programme. ....

FOR two weeks I have enjoyed the welcome respite of not having to put up with the invariably crabbit Ruth Davidson searching like a lurcher in the dark to get a smidgeon of the reflected limelight that surrounds the First Minister.
If I’m honest, deep down I had suspicions . well, really I kind of knew it was too good to last. Now I say help me and mine as it’s all gone diabasticle! Is it just that Ruth is back too soon or has she just never really been away?
Media reports suggest that the pesky DRoss needs strategic reinforcement – some are even suggesting he is to be subbed. He talks about being the leader of his strong team. Huh, it’s not even half time in the election and he’s got problems wi’ his boots – he can’t fill the ones he’s been given and in spite of great exhortations he’s also having trouble keeping his socks pulled up. A further extension to the £20 a week Universal Credit top-up payment beyond September is a decision for the chancellor, a minister has said.
Will Quince said he expected the Treasury to look this summer at whether it should be kept in place for longer, based on health and economic data.
The UK was still very much in the depths of the pandemic , he said.
Opposition parties and anti-poverty campaigners have called for it to be maintained for at least a year.
But ministers have emphasised that the uplift, first introduced in April 2020 and worth more than £1,000 a year, is temporary and would be too costly to keep in place indefinitely. ....

Welfare minister faces rare joint Lords and Commons select committee questions on failure to reform Universal Credit

A RARE joint meeting of MPs and Lords will quiz the government on Tuesday on its failure to reform universal credit (UC), which does not provide a “dependable safety net” for working people.
The House of Commons work and pensions committee and the House of Lords economic affairs committee will question Welfare Minister Will Quince after the government gave a “disappointing” response to their reports on UC, which is supposed to help the poorest with living costs.
He will be joined by Neil Couling, head of UC at the Department for Work and Pensions.
The session, which will be held remotely and streamed on Parliament TV, is likely to look at measures to help vulnerable claimants and Chancellor Rishi Sunak’s announcement in last week’s Budget that the £20 temporary increase in UC has been extended until September. ....
